Author's Notes: Children are strange creatures.

Remus had never understood what it was to be fond of children. He simply wasn't familiar with them, as an adult. If he stopped to think about it, he'd never really understood children when he was a child, always keeping himself somewhat aloof from his classmates. Were it not for his fellow dorm-mates, he often thought he would have gone through his school years with his nose in a book.

They hadn't let that happen, though. They'd pulled him into a firm friendship and kept him a part of the school, part of his house. He was grateful to them for that. They'd made what could have been an unbearable time in his life one of the happiest.

It wasn't much different as an adult, however. He still didn't understand children. They were loud and rude and often quite messy. They were just such strange creatures. When the offer of employment came from Professor Dumbledore, Remus had accepted reluctantly. There were only three things that could have made him accept, and had one or another of those reasons been missing, Remus would have declined.

But Harry was at Hogwarts, and Sirius had escaped from Azkaban... And quite frankly, Remus needed the money. Simple, simple reasons.

As the school year progressed, however, it happened again. The students pulled him into relationships, and kept him part of the school. He found himself smiling at the first years who greeted him in the hall. Remus felt the sick fear for them when it was found that Sirius Black had gotten into the castle somehow.

When it came to an end and Remus packed his trunks and cases, he was disappointed, but not bitter. The students, his children, had made an unhappy time in his life bearable. He'd learned something himself over the year... he didn't necessarily have to understand children to be fond of them.
