Remus never questioned that Sirius loved him. He never had to. Sirius would tell him verbally a hundred times a day, and by deed a thousand more. And Remus always assumed that Sirius knew how Remus felt in return.

But twice a year, on Halloween and on Saint Valentine's Day, Sirius would ask.

The first owl arrived for Remus on Valentine's day of their sixth year. Remus had opened it curiously and had laughed at the silly Valentine's card. Scrawled in Sirius' sloppy schoolboy writing was the question: "How much do you love me?"

And Remus had been more than happy to show Sirius exactly how much.

The second owl had come the following year at Halloween. Another goofy card was delivered, with the same question. "How much do you love me?" Remus had grinned and asked, "Why Halloween?"

Sirius' reply, "Because that's the day I was sure you loved me back," had Remus falling in love with him all over again.

Every year. Twice a year. Remus knew, because Remus still had every single card. And he'd answered all of them... except for one. The Halloween card that came after James and Lily had been killed had gone unanswered. There hadn’t been a Valentine’s day card.

When Remus received the large envelope from Azkaban years later, he was at a loss. He wasn't Sirius' beneficiary. All his personal effects should have gone to Harry. Remus was confused.

Until, that is, he opened the envelope.

It was filled with various bits of paper, some actual cards, and some just random scraps. Two for every year, dated October thirty-first and February fourteenth, without exception. Remus didn't have to read them to know the question scrawled there in sloppy, schoolboy writing. But he read them all, just the same: "How much do you love me?"

Now Sirius was gone. There would be no more cards.

But Remus stood at the side of an empty grave. With a sad smile, he placed the card against a plain, simple headstone.

"How much do you love me still, Sirius?"
